Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 1.02.45 PMCan you believe another year has almost drawn to a close? We might not have gotten through all 365 days just yet, but it’s never too early to start planning your New Year’s Eve dress. Many women have a tough time choosing what to wear for New Year’s, so here are our tips on how to be the belle of the ball:

  • Kill the holiday colors!

Showing up at a New Year’s party in holiday colors is the fashion equivalent of not taking your Christmas lights down till Easter. Christmas is over, so put your red and green back in the closet for next year—it’s time to turn over a new leaf! There are many colors that can work well for New Year’s Eve dresses, but we recommend going with either gold or silver. Dresses in these colors can be extremely eye-catching without being overwhelming and they go nicely with the optimistic vibe of a holiday dedicated to optimism, resolutions, and looking forward to the coming year. Alternatively you can even work some brighter spring colors into your ensemble, but do it in small doses—remember, we may be looking ahead but it will still be many months before flowers are blooming outside.

  • Sparkles and sequins.Screen Shot 2014-12-17 at 1.02.34 PMAlso going hand in hand with the New Year’s spirit is anything that sparkles or glitters—and that means sequins are a YES for New Year’s Eve party dresses. As always with sequins, think carefully about how to gleam without blinding anyone: a red sequin dress, for example, is extremely showy whereas a silver or blue sequin dress, or a classic black sequin number, is a nice contrast of reserved and glittery. For brighter dresses, consider those that have sequin details but are not head-to-toe shimmer.

  • Have a ball.
  • Unlike pumpkins at Halloween, turkeys at Thanksgiving, or trees at Christmas, New Year’s Eve doesn’t exactly have its own trademarked symbol. But if there is one iconic image associated with New Year’s, it’s the dropping of the ball at Times Square, with all the excitement that final countdown entails. That means New Year’s is the perfect time to rustle up some spherical earrings. Just make sure they don’t look like Christmas tree ornaments—see also #1 above!

  • Relax.
  • Remember, New Year’s is the end of the holiday season and by now most people are nearly partied out. You can choose virtually any style dress that fits you well and enjoy your champagne in style; there is no strict theme you need to master for New Year’s Eve.

What are you going to wear when the ball drops this year?
